Introduction The Mentoring Institute, supported by the Youth Business International organization based in the United Kingdom, operates in Mongolia with the following objectives:
- Training ethical, entrepreneurial-minded mentors who are eager to voluntarily share their accumulated knowledge and experience; and
- Developing mentoring programs aligned with organizational and project goals while strengthening institutional capacity.
Since its first mentor training program in 2014, the institute has trained a total of 2,223 mentors across various social and economic sectors as of 2024. By fostering more mentoring programs and mentor-mentee relationships, the institute not only promotes a culture of mentorship but also contributes significantly to the development of Mongolia’s business, social, environmental, and governance sectors.
Mission
To strengthen Mongolia’s mentoring ecosystem by cultivating ethical, experienced mentors and delivering mentoring programs that align with national development priorities and the needs of disadvantaged young entrepreneurs.
Vision
A thriving society of mentoring entrepreneurs empowered by knowledge, committed to sustainability, and inspired to create meaningful change.
History of Mentoring
The concept of mentoring dates back over 3,000 years to Homer’s Odyssey, where Mentor was entrusted with guiding Odysseus's son, Telemachus. Mentor played roles as an advisor, teacher, role model, and caregiver. The term gained modern relevance in 1699 when François Fénelon referenced Mentor in his work “The Adventures of Telemachus”. Today, mentorship is illustrated through characters like Dumbledore in “Harry Potter” and Yoda in “Star Wars”, inspiring young generations across various fields.
In Mongolian history, a similar concept is found in “The Secret History of the Mongols”, where Yesükhei entrusted his son Temüjin (Chinggis Khan) to Dai Setsen with wise instructions. The term "Setsen" (meaning wise) parallels the idea of mentorship as someone who shares wisdom and experience. Modern mentoring spans personal and professional relationships across all sectors, adapting to technological advancements such as digital mentors powered by artificial intelligence.
This initiative is designed to instill and promote a mentoring culture in Mongolia, thereby enhancing inclusive entrepreneurial development. It provides a structured platform to connect skilled mentors with aspiring youth entrepreneurs through a values-based, impact-driven, and professionally guided mentoring programs.
